Some of our users ran into problems when trying to download data from the USCS Genome Bioinformatics and BIOMart sites. Their scripts attempt to download segments of DNA via http. While our HPC servers have a proxy bypass allowing users to download data the firewall on the proxy server for TMG was killing the connection as the data provided by the connection does not comply with RFC standards in that is does not return a file size. In order to circumvent this we created an institutional global firewall rule for these sites and bypassed TMG by adding no_proxy=<URL1, URL2...> to all HPC nodes. Many thanks to our team leader Eugene for helping to determine the root cause of this issue.
