Steve Tueche who is the Co-PI for Globus presented on Globus Transfer. Globus Transfer can be described as a alternative to Dropbox in which it allows researchers to move data between their desktops / laptops to a storage nodes for others to use. How this works is that you create an account on www.globusonline.eu and download the globus connect client for your operating system, run the installation and enter the security key when creating a endpoint. Globus themselves do not provide storage servers but rather provide the mechanisms to make the transfer between one point and another.
This is a great tool which can be used for transferring large amounts of data. The IT department would need to setup a storage server and install the GCMU which is described here. From a firewall perspective the ftp control and data port channels needs to be made available, 50000 - 52000 high ports should be made available.
