{"id":1152,"date":"2011-02-04T12:59:47","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T10:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldblogs.uct.ac.za\/blog\/big-bytes\/2011\/02\/04\/first-light"},"modified":"2015-08-14T14:08:36","modified_gmt":"2015-08-14T12:08:36","slug":"first-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ucthpc.uct.ac.za\/index.php\/2011\/02\/04\/first-light\/","title":{"rendered":"First Light"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_MPI\">OpenMPI<\/a> is now configured on the new cluster.\u00a0 There was an issue with the installation, in that the package was pre-configured to expect <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/InfiniBand\">Infiniband<\/a> which we do not have (yet).\u00a0 However after several hours spent battling with it we found the configuration parameter to bypass this requirement and MPI jobs are now running.\r\n\r\nOur newest HPC user is currently submitting jobs on the cluster using MPI compiled C code.\u00a0 Things seem to be running smoothly and we'll continue to monitor the job progress over the weekend.\u00a0 While we've been running live user jobs for the last two months this is actually a major step for us as it represents a maturation in our ability to provision an independent cluster from the ground up, with user and software support in under 48 hours.\r\n\r\nWe are also anticipating increasing the CPU count by 8 early next week with the addition of two extra servers.\u00a0 We will use the new kit in a proof of concept arrangement to test partitioning the cluster to segregate resources for specific user groups.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_MPI\">OpenMPI<\/a> is now configured on the new cluster.&nbsp;
