{"id":1214,"date":"2010-04-23T14:08:02","date_gmt":"2010-04-23T12:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oldblogs.uct.ac.za\/blog\/big-bytes\/2010\/04\/23\/egee-user-forum-in-sweden"},"modified":"2022-09-26T19:51:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T17:51:56","slug":"egee-user-forum-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ucthpc.uct.ac.za\/index.php\/2010\/04\/23\/egee-user-forum-in-sweden\/","title":{"rendered":"EGEE User Forum in Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"Andrew Lewis and Timothy Carr from UCT accompanied by Dr Bruce Becker\r\nattended the <a href=\"http:\/\/egee-uf5.eu-egee.org\/\">5th and final EGEE User Forum<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uppsala\">Uppsala<\/a>, Sweden.\u00a0 It was a great\r\nopportunity to meet other Grid users and project coordinators and we\r\nmade some very useful contacts.\u00a0 It was also fun to meet up with some of\r\nthe people we'd been working with in Europe for the past year.\u00a0 The key theme\r\nfrom the conference was one of more collaboration in order to avoid\r\nduplication of effort, especially in the MPI and portal domains.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/ucthpc.uct.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Untitled-6.jpg\" alt=\"Uppsala University\" border=\"0\" \/>\r\n\r\nIt took a while to get used to the weather, frequently well below zero\r\nwith occasional light snow.\u00a0 As it was the last EGEE forum (the project\r\nphase is now closing and it will now be EGI) the coordinators decided to\r\nmake it a memorable event and on Tuesday night we enjoyed a spectacular\r\ndinner in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uppsala_Castle\">Uppsala Castle<\/a>.\u00a0 Over the course of the forum the South African delegates attended discussions in bioinformatics, Earth observation, scientific gateways and portals, computational chemistry, high energy physics, parallel processing and MPI architecture.\u00a0 Dr Bruce Becker gave a very well received talk on the South African National Grid in the Regional Projects session.\u00a0 Two windfalls to come out of the forum were the implementation of gqsub (a qsub like wrapper for gLite developed by a Scottish University) and a graphical monitoring tool for the grid using Google Earth.\r\n\r\n<img src=\"https:\/\/ucthpc.uct.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Untitled-7.jpg\" alt=\"EGEE participants\" border=\"0\" \/>\r\n\r\nUnfortunately on the 2nd last day of the conference ash from the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_eruptions_of_Eyjafjallaj%C3%B6kull\">Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull<\/a> shut down air traffic over Europe and\r\nwe found ourselves stranded indefinitely in Sweden.\u00a0 Luckily we had not\r\nbooked out of our hotel yet, or found ourselves stuck in the 'departure\r\nhall limbo' as so many unfortunate travelers did.\u00a0 The Swedish home\r\naffairs were extremely helpful and granted us temporary residency.\u00a0 We\r\ntook full advantage of the situation and visited the HPC data center at Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uppmax.uu.se\/\">UPPMAX<\/a>), went on a brief visit to Stockholm and a walking tour of a\r\nViking village at Gamla Uppsala.\u00a0 We also visited the spectacular Uppsala\r\nUniversity Museum housing a collection of Viking and Egyptian exhibits,\r\na huge display dedicated to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Linnaeus\">Carl Linnaeus<\/a> as well as first editions of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philosophi%C3%A6_Naturalis_Principia_Mathematica\">Newton's Principia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidereus_Nuncius\">Galileo's <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sidereus_Nuncius\">Sidereus Nuncius<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uppmax.uu.se\/\"><img src=\"https:\/\/ucthpc.uct.ac.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Untitled-8.jpg\" alt=\"Uppmax.se\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>\r\n\r\nOn the 2nd Friday we took a chance and managed to wangle our way onto an\r\naircraft heading for Doha.\u00a0 48 hours later we were back in SA to find\r\nthat our director had kindly given us the Monday off in consolation for\r\nall our hardships ;-)","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrew Lewis and Timothy Carr from UCT accompanied by Dr Bruce Becker<br \/>\nattended the <a href=\"http:\/\/egee-uf5.eu-egee.org\/\">5th and final EGEE User Forum<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uppsala\">Uppsala<\/a>, Sweden.&nbsp;
